Exciting news!! The City of Fountain City was recently chosen as a recipient of the AARP’s Small Dollar, Big Impact Grant! $1000 has been awarded for the city to launch The Nook – A Little Free Community Library.

What is The Nook?
Just off the lobby area of the historic auditorium is an old unused office space that’s been shuttered and neglected but with plenty of potential for creating a grassroots community library. Think books, games, movies, crafting, and more for our residents young and old to enjoy. Little Free Library-ish!

But why?
Um, where do you begin?! One of the things most lacking for our residents is enrichment opportunities. The Nook is small scale with BIG potential. And right now during the COVID crisis, our residents need it more than ever. The nearest free library for Fountain City residents is 20 miles away in Alma, WI. Winona, MN is only 9 miles away but requires an out of state membership at $45 annually.

How does it work?
In coordination with the city’s open rec nights, families will pick a time slot for social distanced browsing and check out until an online reservation system can be put in place. Curbside can be arranged. Think of this as a classroom library. You will get a library card and have to sign out your materials. Non-rec times will be staffed by volunteers.

How can you help?
The AARP Grant kicks off the project in a big way but will not fully fund The Nook. We are seeking donations to help fill the shelves and create Grab & Go Kits. Please see the list below for sought after items. Monetary donations can be dropped at City Hall or sent to 42 N Main St., Fountain City WI 54629.
